The female reproductive system is the birth place of life. It is the site of conception that is, where a sperm cell fertilizes an egg.
It is made up of internal and external organs.
The external parts are generally called the vulva and they include; the labia majora and minora which form the lips, the clitoris and the bartholin’s glands.
The internal organs are; the vagina, the uterus (womb), the ovaries and the fallopian tube.

The vagina is a hollow elastic tube made up of smooth muscle. It begins from the uterus and extends outside ending in a small opening. The vagina is used for;
Birth
Sex
Menstrual flow.
Vagina health is a very important aspect of reproductive health. The vagina serve as an inlet and outlet of the reproductive system. What goes into your vagina can affect it positively or negatively.
Note that the vagina is different from the vulva. Also vulvas vary per person in color, texture and size as well as vaginas vary in length and since. Since the vagina has been described as a tube some females have shorter vaginas and others longer vaginas. The average length ranges from 7-10cm and increases in length when sexually aroused. Also the vagina may increase in size after birth and during menopause where it looses its elasticity.
The health of vagina depends on what you eat, how much water you drink, the type of underwear you wear and on your personal hygiene.
With respect to personal vagina health depends on how often a day you take a bath and how you clean.
How to keep a healthy Vagina
First it is important to note that the vagina is has an acidic environment with pH ranging from 3.8-4.5. This acidity is maintained by several bacteria known as vagina flora an example of such bacteria is the lactobacilli it produces lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Also several hormones such as estrogen encourage the vagina’s acidic pH. This acidic pH protects your vagina from infection. Washing the inside of your vagina can disturb this normal pH. The vagina is a self-cleansing organ this also explains the discharges you see on your underwear. Douching is not a healthy practice for your vagina. Washing with soap may make it smell better or make you feel fresher but you are also killing your normal flora exposing yourself to infection. The vagina has normal odor which is caused by actions of the normal flora. So there is nothing wrong with your vagina having odor although, if the odor is too strong or smells like rotten fish then there is a problem. You may have yeast and should see a doctor.

Only your vulva can be washed with soap. Be careful on the type of soap used some soaps can cause irritation and should be avoided. Make sure to wash with clean water.
Hence do not douche or use scented products on your vagina. When washing your vulva be sure to wash just your labia majora which is the larger lip. You can use cleaning wipes to feel fresher. They are specially made not to affect vagina pH.
Avoid using panty liners, they make your vulva moist and warm which can encourage the growth of yeast. Also some panty liners are scented and can cause irritation.
Be sure to clean properly from front to back after using the toilet to avoid carry bacteria from use anal region to your vagina.
Talking about underwear, wearing 100% cotton white underwear is the most appropriate. It keeps your vagina fresh and prevents moisture which may cause your vagina to smell more and also help you monitor your discharges better. Make sure to wash your underwear clean with detergent and clean water.
Avoid shaving your pubic hair. Shaving causes irritation which can be seen as bumps or pimples, this is a hair infection of the hair follicles called folliculitis. Also you can get cuts when shaving and blades usually carry a ton of bacteria which may infect you. If you aren’t comfortable with hair you can trim, wax clip, or use laser removal do what works for you but do not shave.
During sex be sure to use a condom if you are not planning on getting pregnant. Condoms don’t just prevent pregnancy but also prevent STIs and STDs when you are not sure of your partner’s health state. Make sure your partner washes his hands properly if he is going to use his finger. Having oral sex introduces mouth bacteria into your vagina and maybe harmful. After sex make sure to pee and clean up, pee helps clear off bacteria which may have gotten into the urethra during sex. Consider using organic lubricants such as coconut oil or olive oil.
Stay properly hydrated and avoid diets heavy in carbohydrates and sugar they encourage the growth of yeast
Avoid using scented pads or tampons during periods and be sure to change them every 3-4 hours.
Wear clothing that lets you breath down there. Avoid wearing tight-fitting cloths and underwear which may cause sweat and accumulation of moisture.
Visit a gynecologists regularly for checkups.
