Technological unemployment is one which occurs when there is improvement in technology and working practices which may cause some workers to lose their jobs.
Unemployment caused by improvement in technology could also be termed as STRUCTURAL UNEMPLOYMENT.
Scenarios of technological unemployment:
In cases when labour-saving machines are introduced into a production process, an industry or a firm can get rid of labour force(workers) and still produce the same results or better results than before. Therefore some workers may lose their job.
Overall Technology Impact on Unemployment:
The Change or improvement in technology does not have to increase overall unemployment, even though some category of workers may lose their jobs for some time
Having an example, in 1800, the majority of British labor-force were employed in agriculture. Labour-saving technology really meant that food could be produced with just less workers. For this reason, some agricultural workers lost their jobs as farms made more use of machines.
Though some jobs were lost in agriculture, other new jobs were created in the production and the maintenance of the labour-saving machines.
Likely, advances in computers was an implication that firms could produce manufactured goods with least number of laborers. The improved productivity in manufactured goods implied that the relative cost dropped, giving more chances for people to work in service sector.
Why change In Technology Does Not or may not Cause Unemployment
Firstly, i will like us to suppose improvement in technology means we can at all times produce more food with less workers . The this implies that it is cheaper to produce food and hence the price of food should drop.
This therefore means people can spend less percentage of their earnings on purchasing food. Hence people have enough money to spend on other goods and services , as well as may even invest
This increased quest for manufactured commodities causes higher demand, and hence, there will be a higher need for workers.
The Innovations in technology merely impacts the types of jobs within the economy. If increase in labour productivity, we can enjoy a wider range of commodities.
Why Change in Technology May Increase Unemployment:
If there is flexibility in the labour market, then change in technology will not in any way cause unemployment. Otherwise, then it can result to unemployment – at least, for a considerable time frame.
This could be explained by the fact that ; Due to change in technology, those who mine coal may lose their jobs. Non-the-less, due to geographical and occupational mobilities, these workers may not be capable to get new jobs in the service sector i.e a miner may not posses skills to work with computer and may find it hard to relocate.
