As amazing as technology is or has been and as easy it has made life for all us it equally has it’s downside. Like the saying goes as advantageous as something maybe, it equally has its own drawbacks. One of the negative impacts technology has had is on “morality”.
Technology is the application of knowledge and skills to bring about innovations that make life easier.
The birth and evolution of technology has made life so easy that it seems impossible to live without it. Being able to travel long distances in short periods of time, talk to someone from across the country, travel to space, save up tons of data in a tiny chip the list of advancements grow endless as time goes on.
So far it has been made available for everyone unlike some decades back where only a few people could afford a computer or a cell phone.
It’s amazing how technology has evolved from the invention of the first computer which was so big it occupied an entire room, the first phone which could only make short range calls to the making of the first microchip, the internet, smartphones, laptops, tiny desktops and a whole lot more. Now we can share information and make it go viral in a heartbeat, make video calls, have conference meetings online, study online and the speed is mind-blowing.
Morality refers to our standards or right and wrong. This is governed by our ethics. Ethics are beliefs or the way of life of a group of people or a social community and it differs per community. As our ethics differ so do our beliefs or standards of good and bad.
Technology has brought about a lot of practices that make us question our standards of morality. These practices include;
Cyber bullying
Cybercrimes
Pornography
Cyber bullying; There has been an increase rate of online bullying with the advancement of technology, as bully’s can do so without being identified. They are able to do and say what they want to whom they want. There are several form of cyber bulling which include;
Social media harassment.
Intimidation and blackmail
Posting someone’s private information
Posting humiliating content
Spreading abusive and false rumors
Posting on someone’s account
Stalking.
This is seen to occur on platforms such as Facebook, youtube, instagram, snapchat and several other social media sites
This act affects victims mentally, academically, socially. Cyber bullying has been seen to be the cause of several acts of suicide, misuse of drugs.
Cybercrime; These are illegal activities done through a social network using a computer or a smart phone. There has been an increase wave of cybercrime over the years with the advancements in technology.
There are three categories of cybercrime which are: individual, property and government.
At the individual category an individual may spread malicious or illegal information an examples under this category include porn distribution, cyberstalking ponzi schemes and trafficking
Government: it includes hacking of government websites, military websites, spreading of propaganda against the government. These crimes against the government are regarded as acts of terrorism.
Property involves gaining unauthorized access to an person’s personal information such as bank card or credit card details to access the person’s funds or run phishing scams to get people to give away their information.
There are several types of cyber crimes and they include;
Identity theft; This is when the criminal gets access to a person’s personal information such as bank or credit card details to steal funds, participate in tax or health insurance fraud. They can also use this personal info for illegal activities such as claiming of claiming of government benefits or create accounts used for fraud.
Phising; A hacker sends malicious email attachments to gain access to your account or computer.
Online scams; Most of these offers are usually too good to be true usually in the form of ads or spam emails that offer rewards of huge amounts of money
DDoS; They make online services unavailable and bring down the site usually by flooding with traffic from a number of different sources.
With the advancement of technology there has been a growth in online marketing however some people take advantage of this innovation by making sales without delivering any of the products. This is also under online scams.
With the innovations in technology there has been an increase in pornography sites that operate with no age restrictions. This is greatly affecting youths as there has been an increase in porn addiction.
Recently people are more concerned with capturing the moment than remedying the situation. In cases of accidents or street fights or any aspect of violence a person maybe more concerned with making a video for social media than calling the police or trying to stop it.
Immorality: This is one of the highest trending immoral aspect that has increased drastically due to increase in technology. Here , it has to do with the uploading of sex tapes into the internet.
